P. eO _(2_e I ___ u Director's Awards Since 1986, the award has been presented annually to the individual considered to have made a significant contribution to the Justice lnstitute's Fire and Safety Division and one that will ultimately benefit fire service training in B.C. Port Coquitlam's Chief Fire Officer Randy C. Shaw was honoured May 27th as the recipient of the 2001 Director's Award from the Fire and Safety Division of the Justice Institute ofB.C. He received the award in a ceremony that included an honour guard of firefighters at a council meeting in Port Coquitlam. John Vokes, Director, Fire and Safety Division, summed up the reasons for his choice this year. Dean has been an adjunct instructor firstly with the Fire Academy, and now the Fire and Safety Division, since 1993. Dean has performed many functions including developing training programs, assistant instructor, lead instructor, and is currently the adjunct training co-ordinator moted that to his Department. He assisted the Division by instructing in the Fire Officer Program. He has also willingly offered his high angle and confined space facilities to the Division on many occasions when the Maple Ridge site has been unable to accommodate the volume of training. Jack McGee, President of the Justice Institute also recognized Chief Shaw's contribution to the Justice Institute. Shaw was the liaison between Randy Shaw for the Career Fire fighter Pre-employment Program. Dean has touched the lives of many students over the years and without exception receives accolades from every class of pre-employment fire fighter trainees and students in other classes he has taught. In addition, Dean is a gentleman, a highly regarded individual in his own department the Baillie family and the Justice Institute of B.C. Foundation in establishing the Jon Baillie Memorial Fund of $4,665 in honor of former Port Coquitlam fire chiefJon Baillie who passed away last year. The money from the fund is now distributed as a Merit Award to a graduating firefighter from each Career Fire Fighter Pre-employment class. In addition to an exemplary professional contribution, Shaw has shown tremendous courage and strength of character in his personal life and his fight to regain his health following a recent illness. "The turnout of fire department members at the recognition ceremony in itself spoke volumes of the respect and esteem felt for Chief Shaw by his staff," said Vokes. and within his community. Government lifted the freeze on post-secondary institution tuition retroactive to March 31, 2002. It has been over five years since the Justice Institute, Fire & Safety Division reviewed its tuition fees.
