Twenty years ago, the Academy began training all BC Ambulance Service paramedics. Our training facilities and programs have expanded and we now also train emergency medical personnel across Canada. Paramedic Programs are accredited by the Canadian Medical Association and by its Conjoint Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Care Professions. The Academy's programs extend internationally, with training of emergency personnel in countries such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates. Professional Health Programs (PHP) The Paramedic ;\cademy's PHP division provides professional development courses for physicians, nurses, paramedics and other healthcare professionals. Serving a wide variety of emergency medical personnel for over 20 years, our courses are practice-based and cooperative. Participants learn through lectures, small group scenarios and rigorous hands-on practice. Our instructors, skilled practitioners themselves, provide a cooperative learning environment where information is shared and the contribution of all participants is encouraged. www.jibc.bc.ca/paramedic 2 Paramedic Academy I Professional Health Programs I Justice Institute of BC I www.jibc.bc.ca/paramedic General Course Information All courses are held at the Justice Institute of BC's New Westminster campus, unless otherwise indicated. New Resuscitation Guidelines - November 200s Updated cardiopulmonary resuscitation {CPR) and ECC {emergency cardiac care) guidelines were released by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada {HSFC) on November. 28, 2005. The press release from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada indicates that the new emergency care guidelines include dramatic changes to CPR and emphasis on chest decompressions. The most significant change to CPR is to the ratio of chest compressions to rescue breaths - from 15 compressions for every two rescue breaths in the 2000 guidelines to 30 compressions for every two rescue breaths in the 2005 guidelines. The 2005 guidelines emphasize that high-quality CPR, particularly chest compressions, contributes significantly to the successful resuscitation of cardiac arrest victims. Studies show that effective chest compressions create more blood flow through the heart to the rest of the body, thus providing a few critica l minutes until defibrillation can be attempted. The guidelines recommend that rescuers minimize interruptions to chest compressions and suggest that rescuers 'push hard and push fat' when giving chest compressions. For further details on the new guidelines visit www.heartandstroke.ca. .. The release of the new resuscitation guidel ines means that there will be changes to training materials for resuscitation courses offered by Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada training affiliates. New materials for BCLS/ CPR, ACLS and PALS, that reflect changes made to the guidelines, will be released throughout 2006. It is not expected that new material for CPR will be released until the Spring, and new material for ACLS and PALS will be released later in the year. Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada will conduct a National Resuscitation Conference in Toronto from May 25 - 27, 2006.
