The health of coastal waters and its marine life in British Columbia (BC) has been the subject of concern for many Canadians in recent years. Several researchers have written about how the government is not overseeing the Oceans Act, 1996 and the Fisheries Act, 1985 to provide adequate protection for marine life in BC. This research study examined how the government is overseeing the federal legislation, where is it failing to apply the existing regulations and policies, and what are the impacts on marine life as a result of it. After reviewing the literature, four themes were identified as the most fundamental to protecting and safeguarding all marine life: implementation of marine protected areas, contamination, federal initiatives (recovery strategy plans), and oceans science. The information gathered was critically evaluated to ensure the credibility, currency, and validity of the information. After examining the information and identifying the gaps, several recommendations were made into how the federal government can improve the health of coastal waters and the life it supports.
