Abstract
Restorative justice (RJ) is becoming increasingly acknowledged as an alternative to conventional criminal justice methods with an emphasis on mending harm, encouraging accountability, and promoting reconciliation via candid communication. This study looks at
how RJ is incorporated into Indigenous traditions in Canada and shows how it may be used to create culturally sensitive frameworks that put public safety and community healing first. Indigenous legal systems offer insightful perspectives that emphasize holistic healing, group
accountability and spiritual rehabilitation. By fostering long-term community resilience, these perspectives can enhance the influence of RJ on public safety. Addressing past and present colonial effects is one of the many difficulties in bringing these practices into line with
Canada's current legal framework. This study examines these challenges, examines successful integration models, and makes suggestions for further research. To better suit the needs of Indigenous peoples in Canada, RJ can be modified to address colonial legacies and increase community involvement, creating communities that are safer and more resilient. |
